A Nyonya’s Love for Beading and Heritage
Sharing the quiet beauty of Peranakan beadwork — one stitch at a time.

The word Peranakan comes from the Malay word “anak” — meaning “local-born” or “local descendants”. It refers to communities born of cultural intermarriage, most notably between Chinese settlers and women from local communities in the 15th century.
These families created a distinct heritage that blended languages, clothing, food, and art — a vibrant culture passed down through generations.

Among the many treasured crafts of the Peranakan world, one stands out in quiet elegance: Beaded Shoes (Kasut Manek). Traditionally hand-stitched by Nyonya women to express patience, grace, and devotion,
Each pair tells a story —
One Bead At A Time.

“Beading teaches patience. It helps me connect with the women before me — and with those who are just beginning.”

Meet Angeline –
A Beader of Time and Tradition
Angeline Kong is a 6th-generation Peranakan who first fell in love with beadwork as a child, playing with her mum’s handmade shoes — a cherished pair inherited from her maternal grand-aunt. But it wasn’t until the age of 29 that she finally found a teacher — and from that moment, her journey began.
With nearly 30 years of beading experience, Angeline nurtured her craft alongside a full-time career. It was only after retirement that she fully dedicated herself to the art — not to build a name, but to keep a fading tradition alive.
She now shares her knowledge through handcrafted works, custom beading kits, and workshops that welcome everyone — from curious beginners to heritage lovers around the world.
Her Works –
Beading with Purpose
From kasut manek (beaded shoes) to handmade pouches and accessories, each piece Angeline makes is stitched with tradition and care. Her preferred material — Czech beads — adds a refined shine, chosen for both beauty and authenticity.
She also offers custom beading kits for those who wish to experience the joy of beading for themselves. Ideal for beginners, bonding activities, or cultural appreciation events, these kits come with templates and everything you need to begin.

Workshops & Cultural Sharing
Angeline offers a variety of Peranakan beading workshops — from 1-hour introductory sessions to 4 sessions of immersive experiences. Whether for individuals, families, schools or corporate teams, her workshops are a gentle way to connect, create, and understand a beautiful culture.
She also conducts demonstrations and sharing sessions, both in-person and online (case-by-case basis), continuing to bring awareness of Peranakan heritage across borders.
